Top Ten Tuesday – Committed to Reading in 2017

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

The one New Years resolution I always make is a list of books I’m definitely reading this year. In past years, I haven’t always succeeded but it’s helpful to me to have a list in mind even if I don’t always accomplish it. Which makes no sense, but whatever. Making it official in a blog post that I can look back on should help. *fingers crossed*

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings #1) by J.R.R. Tolkien [Purchase]
I read this one several decades ago but don’t remember much and ended up quitting mid-way through Two Towers. Hoping to finally be able to cross this off my list.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë [Purchase]
Next up on the classics I was never forced to read… last year I purchased the Audible narration by Thandie Newton and it sounds beautiful. I’m actually really excited but I hear it’s a sad one.

Thursbitch by Alan Garner [Purchase]
This one has become a running joke at this point. I spent far more than I usually spend on books to get this shipped to from the UK and yet it sits on my shelf collecting dust bunnies.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman [Purchase]
With the show coming out soon, this needs to be read sooner than later since I’m a book before the movie/show purist.

The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower #1) by Stephen King [Purchase]
Above comment also applies to Gunslinger. Also because I finally conquered The Stand last year and I wanted to read that one before Dark Tower series because Roland. 🙂

Troubled Waters (Elemental Blessings #1) by Sharon Shinn [Purchase]
After I read A Court of Mist and Fury I went a teensy bit crazy for anything similar. Maas recommended almost all of Shinn’s books and this one looks the best. Another possibility is Archangel.

Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie [Purchase]
Anytime I’m in the mood for something cute and fluffy, Bet Me always seems to be at the top of everyone’s lists. I’ve read a few other Crusie’s and they’re fun (Agnes and the Hitman being my absolute favorite) so this one needs to be next.

Undead (Undead #1) by Kirsty McKay [Purchase]
I won this series in a contest years ago and I’m a bit embarrassed that I haven’t made time for it. In an attempt to read more “light” reads, I’d like to finally make time for this fun sounding zombie series.

The Duchess War (Brothers Sinister #1) by Courtney Milan [Purchase]
I adore Courtney Milan. Her Turner series always makes the list for favorite historical romances so I have no idea why I haven’t dove into this one yet. This is the year!

Stop in the Name of Pants! (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson #9) by Louise Rennison [Purchase]
Okay, this one tops it. How do I read 8 installments in a series one year and then not finish? I only have 2 installments left and when thinking of fluffy, fun reads I needed to read this immediately came to mind.

    • I’ve been slowly collecting all of the books in the series and I finally have them all! I’m not sure if I’ll be able to read them all back to back (dang review books) but I’m hoping to maybe finish it over the course of the year. We’ll see. That sounds overly ambitious. lol

  1. I do love making book lists too Bonnie, but I just have a hard time sticking to them, I blame that to the mood reader in me. I so want to read more classics too, there’s still so many that I haven’t got around to and I’ve heard great things about Bet. I hope you’re able to tackle a lot of the books from your list!

    • That’d be awesome, Jennifer! I’m not sure when exactly I’ll be starting any of them but American Gods (the show) starts in April so maybe March? My LOTR fan-girl friend likes to do an annual re-read sometime soon I think. As for Jane Eyre, I’ve heard I need to prepare my heart for sadness. haha I’ll let you know!

  2. I read American Gods years ago and didn’t love it, but maybe I just wasn’t in the right headspace at the time. I might give it another try before the TV show airs. Seeing the Gunslinger on your list makes me feel guilty — I read the first 3 books in the series, and then just kind of wandered off and never continued. I really should, because I enjoyed the 3 I read. Good luck! Looks like you have great books lined up!

  3. Good luck with these!

I discovered Sharon Shinn last year and yes DO RECOMMEND. I especially recommend her book Summers at Castle Auburn. It’s sadly a standalone but it is EXCELLENT. I also have read the first two in Mystic and Rider series and they are also shaping up to be quite a romantic fantasy series. I need to get Troubled Waters, too!

I looooove Bet Me. Did you read The Hating Game last year? If you haven’t YOU SHOULD and if you did and loved it (like you should) this is gonna be another fave read. So much fun and banter and SHIIIIP.
