Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
Night Shift by Stephen King {Purchase}
This has been the best and the scariest King I have read so far (no, I haven’t read It yet). King knows how to do a short story right and these are some of the most incredible I’ve ever read.
The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock {Purchase}
Many on my list don’t constitute your typical horror and this is definitely one of them. What was most unnerving was the sick and twisted mindset of the individuals in the backwoods town of Knockemstiff, Ohio. It was plenty horrific for me.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind {Purchase}
A serial killer who hunts beautiful young virgins, sure, but all he wants to do is create the perfect scent. *shudders* I read this a long, long time ago and it managed to leave such an indelible impression on me to this day. It’s sick and twisted but I have yet to read anything that compares.
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill {Purchase}
An aging rock star decides bidding on a ‘ghost’ would be a brilliant move. Not. HSB was the start of my undying love for all things Joe Hill but this one is by far his creepiest.
The Collector by John Fowles {Purchase}
Incredibly chilling and completely unforgettable. This one will definitely give you the heebie jeebies. Absolutely adored Fowles’ writing and really need to read more of his works.
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson {Purchase}
The mere thought of being the last person alive on earth, eeek! Add in vampire-esque creatures, and you have got a psychological fright fest.
The Complete Tales and Poems by Edgar Allen Poe {Purchase}
Poe is my go-to creepy author. As much as I love reading this collection (so much so that one of my copies is worn into halves), try listening to The Tell-Tale Heart for an extra chill.
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk {Purchase}
One word: TRIPPY! This book pulls on the tradition of strangers being called to a house and then facing demons – internal and external. Haunted is gross and funny, and most of all scarily unsettling.
Coraline by Neil Gaiman {Purchase}
I find Coraline very relatable as a former child (and adult) with an overly active imagination. I love the warped reality and monstrous creatures of her own making. Also, children’s horror is about as much spookiness as I tend to like. I’m a big ol’ chicken.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson {Purchase}
This was the first book that scared my socks off and showed me how terrifying an inanimate object could be. Still to this day, I get shudders just thinking of Hill House.
Some terrifically creepy books up there. I would have to add Stephen King’s It and Bag of Bones as well as Dracula to your list.

Awesome list! I’ve always meant to read The Collector, and I picked up I Am Legend at our last library sale. I see a few here that I definitely need to read!

Once I figured out what was on the cover of The Devil All the Time, I decided it WAS creepy. It took me a little bit though.
