Man Booker Prize 2013 – Shortlist Announcement

Posted September 10, 2013 by Bonnie in Uncategorized / 5 Comments

The Man Book Prize was launched in 1969 and is a literary prize for the best original full-length novel written by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.

I have always found myself drawn to the winners and nominees of this literary prize even though I very rarely find myself agreeing with the judges decisions (*cough*Life of Pi*cough*). The judges started with a list of 151 novels and the longlist which consisted of 13 was announced on July 23rd, the shortlist has been announced today with a winner being announced October 15th.

Man Booker Shortlist 2013

We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo
The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton
The Harvest by Jim Crace
The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri
A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
The Testament of Mary by Colm Tóibín

I have yet to read any of these (although The Luminaries and Harvest are on my TBR list) so it’s difficult to take a guess at who might win. Jim Crace and Colm Tóibín have already been reported as favorites to win though.

Have you read any of these? Who do you believe should win it all?

I don't know any of these people… I think I heard of A Tale for the Time Being before, and I would probably buy it because of the title alone. I'm known to do such things. So, that one. I vote for A Tale for the Time Being, or The Luminaries.

I can't pick the winner, but I've read two of the shortlist so far but probably will read them all

Nope, I have never heard of any of these titles. I always feel inclined to read award winning books, but seldom do I enjoy them. THey are usually all kinds of drama and disheartening. It will be interesting to see who wins, thoguh.

  4. There are some interesting choices in this one. The only one I was interested in before the shortlist was announced was A Tale for Time Being. I'll probably read the winner, too, eventually, but that one has been on my radar for so long.

I have the Ruth Ozeki book on my shelf, but still haven't read it 🙁 and haven't read any of the others. I really do want to get to A Tale for the Time Being (loved her 1st novel!) but never seem to find the time. I know I'd like to read The Lowlands, and will need to look into the others too!
