Showcase Sunday (62)

I received some lovely review books this week that I’m super excited about. First up is the brand new one from Ellen Hopkins, Smoke, which is the follow-up to Burned. I’ll be listening to that on audio which I’m a bit nervous about because Ellen’s verse writing-style is so lovely I hope it translates well to audio. A big thank you to Charlotte Sheedy Lit for my copy of The Winner’s Curse from a Twitter contest I won of theirs. From Random House I received Cartwheel, a contemporary tale of an American foreign exchange student arrested for murder. This book has some serious hype surrounding it and certainly sounds similar to the Amanda Knox business but I’m intrigued. And lastly! I got Help for the Haunted from the library. I couldn’t resist, it was one I’ve been anticipating.

What new book goodies did you receive this week?

Smoke (Burned #2) by Ellen Hopkins {Purchase}
The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski {Purchase}
Cartwheel: A Novel by Jennifer Dubois {Purchase}
Help for the Haunted by John Searles {Purchase}

  1. I am very very curious about The Winner's Curse. I wasn't too crazy about Rutkoski's last book (Shadow Society) but I did enjoy her writing so I have high hopes. Cartwheel sounds awesome too, I remember Amanda Knox very well.
    Happy reading, hon.

    Ooh, Cartwheel sounds interesting. I might have to add that to my TBR list.

  5. I do love audio books but I can understand why you'd be nervous listening to an author's writing that's beautiful on the page being translated into a voice. The narrator can make or break a story so I hope you enjoy it, Bonnie. Happy reading! 🙂

    I read an ARC of CARTWHEEL a few weeks ago. You're in for a treat.____CARTWHEEL is a story, but, even more, it is an examination of how people think of themselves and how others see them, how easily misunderstandings occur, and how the innocent can appear guilty. ____Jennifer DuBois based her story on a true one from the headlines, which anyone can do. But she does with it what few writers come close to doing. ____DuBois tells the story through the eyes of different characters. In this way, we see how they see themselves and each other, and how they perceive and misconceive others’ actions and events.____Warning: DuBois does something many readers normally dislike. She goes off on tangents

  8. Holy Crap you have The Winner's Curse? :::Tackles Bonnie and runs off!::: seriously, that is awesome! I hope it is as good as the hype!

  9. I'm very excited to read Smoke and The Winner's Curse. Hope Smoke translates to audio well. I don't think I've ever listened to a verse novel before, so I'll be curious to read your review!
